Forget ATT. While in Germany buy a D1 (Deutsche Telekom) throw away cell phone. You can get them for 10 Euro (like 16 bucks) at any of their stores and they’ll come with 5 Euro worth of call time. That’s more than enough call time to make quick calls to let peole know you’re temporary number while traveling in Europe (It’ll work in Czech too, and all over Europe and Asia, lowest model won’t work in North America though). While in Germany text messages and incoming calls won’t cost you a dime (in Czech you’ll be charged for incoming calls, but not incoming text messages). It’s just the way Germans run thier cell phones (or "handys" as they call them).

Wish the states would do that.

It’s also much easier and cheaper to just add a quick additional 10 Euro or so (while at any Telekom store) and use that as your primary phone rather than pay hotel phone usage fees.
